Discussion – Failed State? California’s Political Crisis in Historical Perspective

California is suffering a constitutional crisis, a fundamental breakdown not only of its ability to pass annual budgets but to provide basic public services and provide ultimately for the public good. Join R. Jeffrey Lustig, editor of the newly released Remaking California, and selected contributors from the book, for a discussion on the state’s politics from the roots of the crisis to proposals for constitutional reform. How will you rebuild the world—the schools, parks, forests, the libraries and museums—our children will inherit? This program was developed in collaboration with Heyday Books.

Think California

What comes to mind when you think of California? Beaches, the Gold Rush, freeways and road trips, cultural diversity, agricultural abundance, earthquakes, Hollywood? Indeed, there are many spectacular stories in California’s history. The California Historical Society presents Think California, an exhibition highlighting the colorful history of California through the institution’s remarkable collection of artwork, artifacts, and ephemera. This ambitious exhibition asks the question “What do you think about when you think of California?” Here you see both common and little known facts of the Golden State’s fascinating history, as well as the myths and realities that are the lore of California.

Come join the California Historical Society celebrate all things California – and Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexico's victory over invading French troops in 1862, is an important observance because it reflects the changes and developments in Latino communities throughout California. Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in the state continuously since 1863. Connect, learn, and discuss the future of the great state of California, all while listening to a live DJ and enjoying complementary Cinco de Mayo refreshments.

Revealing the untold stories of a pioneer generation of young Chinese Americans, The Children of Chinatown places the children and families of early Chinatown in the middle of efforts to combat American policies of exclusion and segregation. Author challenges long-held notions of early Chinatown as a bachelor community by showing that families—and particularly children—played important roles in its daily life. Wendy Rouse Jorae, Ph.D. is a lecturer in United States History and Asian American studies at UC Davis and CSU Sacramento.

Book talk and signing with author Charles Fracchia

Join author and San Francisco historian Charles A. Fracchia for a presentation about his latest book When the Water Came Up to Montgomery Street, San Francisco During the Gold Rus. According to Mr. Fracchia, the events surrounding the Gold Rush have guided and shaped San Francisco into the famed tolerant and inclusive city it is today.

Mr. Fracchia is one of the founders of Rolling Stone Magazine and the author of three books on the history of San Francisco. He lectures extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area on various aspects of the city's history, and teaches at City College of San Francisco and at the University of San Francisco. . Mr. Fracchia founded the San Francisco Historical Society in 1988 (which merged with the Museum of the City of San Francisco in 2002), and is the president emeritus of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society.
